Welcome to the Museum of African Art & World Cultures (MAAWOCU). MAAWOCU is an educational and cultural arts museum. It is dedicated to educating the public about the beauty, power, and diversity of African art and her diverse cultural traditions. It will create exhibits and engaging enrichment programs to inspire the public to engage in thought-provoking and creative dialogue. MAAWOCU will serve as an excellent educational environment for young people to learn about and appreciate world cultures and expand their view of the world.
MAAWOCU will be the only African art museum in the country dedicated to exclusively providing exhibits that will highlight the cultural artifacts, music and focus on the rich diversity of the African people and world cultures. The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., is the premier African cultural institution dedicated to displaying African art.
MAAWOCU’s goal is to provide more traditional, modern, and contemporary African artifacts, exhibits, and engaging enrichment programs to create an excellent development opportunity for young people.
Before COVID-19, MAAWOCU enjoyed visits from numerous elementary and high schools, as well as international tourists. Each visit was geared toward educating students about African art, culture, and her diverse people through video presentations and lectures about the African artifacts that are housed in MAAWOCU. In 2020, MAAWOCU changed its name from the Bedford Stuyvesant Museum of African Art (BSMAA) to the Museum of African Art & World Cultures (MAAWOCU).Please note that MAAWOCU is temporarily closed until further notice. We will be back as soon as we feel it is safe for our staff and visitors to do so. Kindly stay in touch.
